Aqikebulak Fm
Type Locality and Naming
The type section is located in the Aqikebulak area to the southwest of the Dikaner region, Shanshan County, Xinjiang. It was named by the Regional Geological Survey Party under the Xinjiang Geological Bureau in 1956.
Lithology and Thickness
Conglomerate and Sandstone. Lower part of the formation consists of purplish-red and greyish-green basal conglomerates, with a thickness commonly of 5-10 m, and the maximum thickness being of 308 m. Upper part of the formation consists of greyish-green polymictic sandstone, yellowish-brown fine-grained sandstone and siltstone, intercalated with white siliceous limestone and bioclastics. Total thickness of the formation is of 536-1400 m.
Relationships and Distribution
Lower contact
Unconformable contact on the underlying Middle Carboniferous Dikaner Fm. However, chart shows diachronous transition to Hongliuhe Fm
Upper contact
Disconformable contact to the overlying Darequanzi Fm.
Regional extent
The formation is only distributed in the center of the Aqikebulak Basin.

Depositional setting
It is interpreted as a suite of terrigenous deposits of continental-margin to shallow-water facies, with no volcanic rocks being found.
